Making a difference

I've started this blog today because it is January 2nd, 2014, and we haven't had any rain to speak of in many months.  This is frightening.  I was raised in Southern California where if you looked beyond the green golf courses and cascading water features of your neighbors pool, you would see a dry landscape where water was scarce.  The long since gone natives of this, and other arid regions, understood not to take a water source for granted.  But, these days we are as much removed from understanding our water source as we are our food, and other products we rely on for survival.  My intention with this blog is to raise people's consciousness to why we need to take immediate steps towards conserving California's water, how to incorporate certain conservation protocols into our daily routine, and feature products that can help.

One of the reasons I was compelled to start writing this blog is because of this graph of California's water reserves.  Apparently the lack of rain and snow is impacting more than just ability to ski.  We are severely low on water in all of California's reservoirs, with some as low as 17% of normal.  This shortage will soon impact our food prices as farmers will take the first economic hit in this dance of supply and demand.  Some ways to lessen the impact of food price increases on your household would be to:
  1. Reduce your consumption of beef products.  Much of California's water reserves are used in the production of food and resources for the cattle industry.  As water prices to farmers go higher, so will the price of beef in the supermarket.
  2. Plant a garden.  Any produce you can raise at home will be that much less you have to pay for at the market.
Please let me know if you have any ideas, news, or information to share that will help spread the word.
